The laboratory of Renal and Vascular Pathophysiology in Torino has the characteristics of an inter-disciplinary research centre, being actively involved in the characterization of inflammatory mediators, in particular platelet-activating factor, complement and cytokines, in the pathogenesis of kidney, lung and cardiovascular diseases and of inflammatory and tumoral neoangiogenesis. Main lines of research include studies on the molecular mechanisms involved in renal injury; studies on the mediators involved in the progression of renal injury; studies on mediators and receptors involved in septic shock; studies on mediators involved in tumor angiogenesis. Recently, the Lab has been involved in research on stem cell based tissue regeneration. The participating scientists have identified human adult resident renal (Am J Pathol, 2005 166:545-55) and liver (Stem Cells. 2006 Aug 31) stem cells. The Lab is currently investigating the role of bone-marrow derived or resident stem cells in renal tissue regeneration and the molecular mechanisms driving stem cell recruitment and differentiation.
